Abstract
“Where does this exhibition end up after it closes?” In 1991, when Mario Mastropietro compiled his Ten Lessons in Exhibition Design, that question was rarely posed.
Thirty years later, this volume revisits that method – the lecture format, the plurality of voices, the focus on concrete practice – to measure it against
the issue that now redefines the entire discipline: sustainability. Not as an environmental parameter added after a project has been defined, but as an
epistemological transformation that compels exhibition design to simultaneously rethink materials, time, supply chains, and its relationships with
places and audiences.
Ten Italian studios – Calvi Brambilla, gambardellarchitetti, Dotdotdot, Cino Zucchi, Migliore+Servetto, Alessandro Colombo, Alessandro Scan
durra, Origoni Steiner, Francesco Librizzi, Ghigos – recount, in as many conversations, how environmental responsibility emerges from within de
sign practice: from language choices even before materials selection, from economic constraints, and from the demands the process places on matter.
Those seeking a manual on ecological exhibition design will be disappointed. Those open to more complex readings will find ten distinct approa
ches – poetic, technical, institutional, critical – and one of the richest bodies of work that contemporary Italian exhibition culture has produced. Not a
manifesto, but a multifaceted survey: ten positions that, in their diversity, reflect the complexity of a field in the process of redefining itself.
